I disagree, otherwise it would be clear that the most popular music is also the "best", because it holds more merit. Even if you factor in "over a long period of time" and therby get rid of viral-fluff like Gangnam style, I can still easily find you tens-of thousands of pop albums that have more "merit" (by your rational) than Brand new will ever, even tho you'd deem most of them forgettable at best. (and I would agree)
