On the topic of rating it after the first listen, I probably could have if I wasn't listening at work. But that caused me to need a handful of listens to not miss anything. So that paid off in a sense, but the only complex things, structurally, are the callbacks to other Acts and songs.
I will say, it's those callbacks and the atmosphere around specific parts in the story that really carry this album for me. The plot progresses and Casey & Co. really emphasize different parts of it very well. And with the payoff we've been building up to over the years finally coming around, I think the excess in this Act is merited.

"Fuck this shit"
The amount of analysis that went into this has inspired me, I think I may just go and smash a bunch of kids ice cream's into the ground now. You sir, are a legend among men and I for one have never felt so gracious to be in the presence of such an intellectual being. Please senpai, teach me your ways.

"I love how we're having a non-toxic discussion even with disagreeing opinions here. Is this really sput?"
Why is this always brought up as sputnik's fault for toxic discussion and not the users? It's the users fault if the discussion remains toxic or civil. Has nothing to do with the site. I've had plenty of non-toxic debates on how I loved or hated an album without me and the other person going at each others throats. Have I taken part in verbal arguments here? Yes, plenty of times but I can honestly say 90 percent of discussion is usually calm without hostility.

"I'm just surprised that their albums are always so, soooooo well received"
Especially given that Dear Hunter seems like a band a fair bit of the Sput user base would be primed to vehemently despise

How so? Good songwriting is good songwriting, simple as that.

It's not that simple
Great songs that are recorded to sound like ass tend to be unpopular

Well, apparently you're in the minority this time, so that might be a problem on your end instead of the production.

The thing is, most of the songs are good on here.
But they're so wide ranging in style and rely so heavily on hamfistedly thrown together interludes to string 'em all up that they play about as nicely together as a toddler unsupervised in a steel mill.

My experience is the opposite. The variation in style is what makes this exciting to listen to, sets it apart and also works well within the concept. It's what Dear Hunter does better instead of a pretty straight rock/pop album as seen with Migrant.
As for the interludes, it actually encourages me to keep listening, even when I initially just want to listen to a single song. Act IV especially did this very well. To say it's hamfisted seems like a gross exaggeration to me, as I don't see this album flowing nearly as well without them.

I was talking in general, a great song isn't enough to make something enjoyable for a listener. A death metal cover version of this album might not be to your taste but the songs would still be the same so the fault wouldn't lie there
