Stay With Me is good guilty pleasure for me tbh.

I've decided 'Stay With Me' gets a pass. I consider the 'if you thought the war was over' the chorus, and its pretty substantive. The way the second chorus leads into the bridge ("I'm teeeeeerrified!") is really powerful, and I love the hectic tambourine. It works for me, but I needed to give it time to. 'The Long Defeat' took less time to win me over, but it still had to earn its keep. Both are neat 3.5/5 tracks.

Whistleblower and Wake Up are the worst, but I would say 3/5 for both, so I'm not even that upset. Reading the lyrics for Wake Up enhance the chorus a little bit, because Dustin's delivery is kind of sleepy and hard to interpret on the recording. The chorus could use something else for sure. Whistleblower is just a little juvenile and one-dimensional for its subject matter, but the energy is great and the delivery is good. Reminds me 'To the Wolves' by Anberlin -- and because Stephen Christian has always been a shitty lyricist, nobody would have a problem with it if Whistleblower was an Anberlin song.

Agreed with Anberlin having some absolutely atrocious lyrics. Really stick out and make me cringe many times. I don't think anything here is nearly as bad as some of Anberlin's worst lyrics.

"haha that would be the best song U2 ever wrote"

jam War. then see if you can justify that statement.

also the lyrics on most of this are pretty killer. only whistleblower and blood on the sand are big letdowns as far as lyrics go -- even wake up, if you read it and don't listen to it, is pretty neat lyrically

imo

Pretty crazy to suggest that song is better than anything U2 did and I'm not even a U2 fan.

Stay with Me is one of the best and so is The Long Defeat. Poppy Thrice is surprisingly good Thrice. Something about those Paramore-esque riffs fit

I love his voice in this album. Or maybe I've mellowed a lot. I've played some of this album on the way to the beach and my cousin got mad and said it sucked. And then proceeded to play The Wonder Years and I thought it was so much better.

Even the lame songs on here I'm enjoying. Might be their most accessible album yet and that's fine by me when I just want to listen to some good rock music. I never really got into Foo Fighters but this feels like it has a more consistent crunch than a Foo Fighters album usually does I don't know.

Had an unexpected emotional reaction to Stay With Me lolz. I like Dustin's voice now. It doesn't punch as much as it used to, but it somehow feels even more sincere than before.
