His slight smile and trench coat just became a lot more sinister.

I agree, I've been approaching it more as a double album, and it breaks pretty easily around Choose Me and I Need a Forest Fire. I would say that second half is more consistent than the first, but the first half has some great tunes as well.

Would prefer it if this was a single album that began with Choose Me

It's hard to do the whole horserace thing between Overgrown and this one. They both have their virtues, and I regularly find myself returning to both. The beauty in Overgrown is how singular it is. It's definitely a modern classic in my book, and the record lends itself to cover-to-cover listening quite well. This album hits me differently. I definitely can't listen to it from start-to-finish at any time like I do with Overgrown, but there are a lot of tracks on here (most of them) that I return to damn-near hourly.

So I guess the difference between Overgrown and TCIA is that Overgrown is more uniform and "listenable" in the traditional sense, while TCIA has stronger songs and plays better in short bursts.

Might listen to a few songs from this, but I can't stand his last two albums

Bumping this to a 4, I'm still finding it over-long, but it is really consistent for the length. I'm really enjoying the textures and vocals, and it's all very well constructed. Sometimes the lyrics are a bit awkward and vapid, but Blake's emotive delivery makes them goddamn convincing.
