At the Gates/ BM? wtf. That dude sounds like he should be in a metalcore band

The occasional Spencer Chamberlain-esque melodic vocals don't really do him any favors tbh. Just ends up sounding very derivative.

You know Undying Light is a stinker and a half when there's still no review posted lol.

Yeah I'm jealous GuyMan, I wanted to like it and tried to give it time to grow and sink in, but it just didn't work. It's too much of an unmemorable blur to me and the new lack of prominent F-Zero leads and shimmering atmospherics just makes this so derivative and boring for me.

At least we still have their two LPs. I think the band might be dead to me now.

Undying Light is such a colossal disappointment and it's a shame that they've gotten this much bad reception from it and I feel bad for them, but waiting 3 years for THAT is ridiculous. They had to have seen this coming.

besides losing their vocalist, they also lost what, their rythm guitar? How much of the band was riding on these guys backs?

Not sure how much of Harvest Wombs or Nomadic was composed by former band members but from Flesh Prevails onward Scott (lead guitar) pretty much takes sole writing credit. Maybe Undying Light is the style he wanted all along. Regardless it's a bummer how uninteresting the songwriting is now compared to their last four releases.

Judging the interviews Scott participated in, he wanted to take the sound in a new direction, I don't understand how hard that thought is for some people. About half of the fanbase has talked shit when they really don't deserve all the hate imo.

They don't deserve the hate but you can't drastically shift to a different sound with less immediate songwriting and expect everyone to be okay with that. I'm fine with them going to a different sound as long as the songwriting is good but this didn't cut it.

Legitimate criticism ≠ hate/talking shit. This band is capable of way more than what they put out on their latest LP. It's not terrible but it's hard not to feel like they're squandering their potential.

Which is true, I prefer the new one over this however, but I feel like they've hit their peak with Nomadic and Flesh Prevails and anything they put on from now on won't be held up to that regard

I got back into their stuff to get ready for Undying Light, and yeah, Dreamless grew off me hard, but The Flesh Prevails sounded better than ever.

After listening to UL more, I've come to the conclusion that the 2nd half is better than the front half, and that homey sounds like Bob Meadows more than my previous comparisons.

Maybe that's why I kinda dig what he's doing.

I think the thing that hurts more than people are letting on is that Brian left, and that the album may have been composed with single guitar in a live setting in mind. Tough to do wall of sound the way they used to, now.
