I would say that they're trying to find a compromise between being "radio friendly" and not radically changing their sound to fit a trend. Their type of rock isn't the "in" thing anymore, but it can still muster up some bucks. So they do it in the catchiest way possible to maximize profits as best as they can without ditching their established sound. Part of it may actually be that they're not capable of radically changing their sound.
It's a compromise of their integrity, rather than a complete sell-out move.
But yeah... Every album reeks of this. The only one that actually feels like they were saying "fuck you" to their label and the radio in general was their self-titled album. Maybe that's why I like it so much.
