I personally love how thick and dense it all is

One thing I will say is that Victoria learns how to better use her voice with every album cycle, even if her melodies don’t always improve. Much as I adore Teen Dream if you listen back to that there were times where she was clearly straining - not so much on 7.

Teen Dream is more 'indie pop', a little more lo-fi (cheaper sounding you could say, more 'keyboard' sounding, than 'synth-y' sounding) and the vocals are somewhat scratchy compared to how pristine they got later.

Every song is uniquely melodic and it's less drone-y in tone than everything they've released since. Their sound has got more dense and the vocals a lot more melodically indistinct to my ears.

New one there's something pleasant in the sound, a sort of wash riding over it that I'm digging. I may have jumped the gun with a 4.5...we'll see.

I still think last week's Eleanor Friedberger has a few songs the equal to the best songs on '7', possibly better even. Sadly that album dips in places, but the opener and closer are immense and a bit Beach House-y.

her singing on the new one is arguably her best singing yet IMO but i'm also a sucker for layered octave vox and she does that a LOT on the new album. pay no mind is pretty much the best song but also really feelin lose your smile

I think I miss a little bit how much clearer her vocals were on this album but yeah I definitely love all of the layering, especially on L'inconnue

The new album reminds me a bit of Air in places - and not just because of the French singing. Is it more of a retro chillout album? Has some pleasantly cheesy 'outer space' FX swirling about in the mix.

Three listens in and I'm settling on a 4 out of 5 for now, same as 'Bloom'.

levitation - space song. best three song run of the decade so far. wonder how the rest of the album is so underwhelming (the closer is great tho).

Same, I used to have this at a 3.5 for Christ’s sake. New one’s great but only a few songs on it match anything from this.
