For me, the songs are kind of slogs that overstay their welcome and most of the supposed payoff ends up being dubiously cheesy lead parts that remind me of the sugariest power metal and don't give me the nihilistic power of the best dsbm. It's just kinda corny to me at the end of the day. And apart from the drums and leads going off on occasion after making you wait several minutes to get to the good part, the rhythm and bass guitar are really wallpaper. They're really a mad decent band, but Deafheaven is wayyyyy better on their worse day. That goes for other gazey shit like Bosse-de-Nage or even the oddball post punk stuff like Lifelover and Psychonaut 4.

Fair enough in a lot of cases, like Silencer. A record like, say, Leviathan's Tenth Sub Level of Suicide is mostly just bleak hell though, not really any cheese to my ear.
