Yeah a lot of the fans look like the kinds of guys who hang around at truck stops and will only listen to something that's heavy as fuk, but there's a good portion of fans that are really openminded and cool people, I try to be the latter anyway

yeah same. nothing wrong with the long hair or band merch or any of that shit, its just some of these "metal dudes" you see at shows take the image / cultural side of things wayyy too far and make it about that / themselves. its like they're part of the club and you're not, when really its just music and the enjoyment of said music.
on the other side though, you will meet dudes at shows who are some of the nicest, most welcoming people you will see at any show, regardless of genre. so there's two sides of the coin, i just get weary when i see folks focusing on the image and the cultural side of things (not that anyone here is doing that, i just wanted to rant))
