(edit: maybe a little too much restraint though)
Based on one listen I am in agreement. They never let things run wild, although it comes close several times, and I think that is a fault more than a positive attribute. I don't know if it is just me but I'm not seeing a real evolution unfolding here, the song begins and does its thing and shows me some nice scenery but I'm not entirely sure that it actually progressed in the way a story should. It feels like a bunch of singular, distinctive heavy sections strung together with VERY brief, placid arrangements i.e. acoustic guitars or piano. They almost never let the two intermingle and let things get real interesting like they used to in their first three records. I am just not feeling the cohesiveness that much.
Again, this is off just one listen.

Now HERE's a question: between it and Crimson, which do you guys prefer?

apples/oranges between this and crimson tbh, as xeno said this isn't nearly as overtly proggy
the fact that they made it a single song made me believe that each section would segue into the next a lot smoother than they actually do. i don't want the record to be homogeneous but i would like some connection between its several distinct parts. there is a clear "doom" influenced portion and a distinct, separate "black metal" influenced portion with each part strung together with an acoustic passage or piano rather than one evolving into the other. i expected the styles to be melded with each other rather than staged alone. not sure if im adequately describing what i mean here.

I always thought crimson was a bit overrated

Agreed.
I wasn't really a fan of the earlier Insomnium releases, so that might be why I don't care that it doesn't really 'feel' like that classic Insomnium sound. I think it's going to get a lot more positive than negative reviews/comments.

They've always been pretty restrained on every one of their records, they found their formula early on in their careers and haven't really deviate much from it, which is the reason for me that none of their albums are poor but none are classic either

Jealous as fuck of anyone that has heard the new album. Haven't really picked up many albums since Be'lakor's latest so I'm overdue for something new to jam.

what are you doing with your life

the new one is solid, but that's about it. not really bad at all, but I was expecting more from it. It's cool they're trying something different, but I just don't know if the album lives up to the epic concept of the book. For me, it's somewhere between 3-3.5

Holy shit, my mate just pointed out that the guitarist from this band is a fucking lecturer at my uni AND I DIDNT EVEN REALISE IT. He lectures evolutionary biology
