Thing is, after Empire they stopped making prog-metal. After that, everyone has different opinions on what sucks and what doesn't.
Of course, there's this, but I'm late to the party on it.

I believe, regardless of whether it was actually a GOOD album or not, that Promise Land is a very progressive album, if not their most progressive. There is nothing progressive about this band after this album, as far as I can tell.

First impression of this is ok. But who knows, it might be a grower!

PL is definitely less hard-rockin' than their previous
albums. The progressive part is debatable.
Well Nag 3'd this, so odds are I might like it.

"they might not have wanted to step too far away from the core Queensryche sound"
I think that the Queensryche history (especially the last 19 years) has proven that no one is comfortable with constant experimentation. To me, the question is: is it sincerity or commercial needs that made them go back to their "glory days"? I believe it's sincerity, otherwise they would have kept Tate and try to pass it as a "return to form".

One thing I can say about PL:
"Damaged", "I Am I" and "Out of Mind" rule hard.

By the way, am I the only one who finds this album way more metallic than Empire?

Some weird production decisions on PL, that's for sure. If they dropped Bridge (I know it's a good song, but wedged in between Out of Mind and the Title Track it really bogs down the pacing of the album) as well as getting rid of disconnected, it would be a much tighter album. Finally, replace the piano version of Someone Else? with the band version, and I feel you have an album that could take out Empire. IMO

Empire is good but it's not even really metal aside from the title track. Still have yet to try this and Promised Land.

Thing is, after Empire they stopped making prog-metal. I have to agree with those that are saying that PL is probably one of their most progressive.
Look at the experimentation in the beginning (all the way up to Promised Land. They experimented but they also maintained a core sound that let people know that it was still Queensryche. After Tate hired a bunch of outside writers there was still experimentation, but it was all over the place. I'm hoping that the band will now go back to 'measured experimentation'. This album proves they can still hit the classic sound, but it came out quick. The next one will prove if they've still really got 'it' in them.
Empire is good but it's not even really metal aside from the title track. Still have yet to try this and Promised Land. All true statements ;)
