yeah, not sure how you can't find any hooks in periphery but whatevs man

I mean neither band really fishes I get that. But they are catchy for sure.
|
| |
It's true that progressive doesn't necessarily have to have hooks, but lets not forget-- Periphery is a progressive METAL band (emphasis on that last word,) and they cater to a scene that more or less demands hooks, of some form or shape, from them. They cater to the djent crowd, which is very much about hooks-- whether rhythmic or melodic

Dude, umm...Periphery has no hooks???
Admittedly, the hooks are carried more by Spencer than anyone else, so if you're turned off by his voice you're bound to miss them, but there are still plenty of instrumental hooks galore in Erised, Scarlet and Luck as a Constant.
In a way, Periphery is the flip side of TesseracT. TesseracT has plenty of instrumental hooks, but not enough vocal ones, while with Periphery it's the other way around.
|
| |
I mean, my first comment was likely an overexaggeration, but yes, I don't hear many hooks in their music. What's so hard to understand about that?
Tracks like Scarlet have their hooks, but many of the others just don't stick with me.

Well it just seemed like a strange point of view, especially compared to TesseracT.

I was just trying to figure out which album I value more, not comparing it to Tesseract

it's a tough call. this is hypnotizingly good, but i feel like periphery is just more fun
kinda just depends on the mood

I prefer this leaps over Periphery. That being said I really gotta bump this rating

It is a pretty tough call. If I had to listen to one of the albums from start to finish then One would win, but if I could cherry-pick my favourite tracks from the albums then PII would win.
|

Sitar is one of the better spoken djentelmen on the site.
|
| |
PII has good material, only tracks like epoch are pointless. But it has solid tracks like have a blast and erised. Love govan and petrucci collaborations

Masamune for the most part made PII for me.
And Tesseract is indeed vastly better.

Periphery = Tesseract
I disagree with this. Like someone said earlier, the bands have different approaches. While there
are a few stylistic similarities, I'd say there are more differences than commonalities.
Besides, I don't even enjoy Periphery and I 5'd TesseracT.
If you had to choose what your favorite and least favorite tracks on this album, what would they
be? Proxy is my fav, along with exiled and nocturne. my least fav would have to be palingenisis
Sorry, I missed your original post. Favorite?... It's extremely difficult to pick between
Singularity, Retrospect and Exiled. Gotta go with Exiled though.
I think you're crazy to pick Palingenisis as your least favorite lol. Eclipse strikes me as the
weakest track by far.

"Eclipse strikes me as the weakest track by far."
WHAT? Dude the grooves and the epic intro! Then the awesome grooviness with the bass halfway through and the awesome vox at the end.

Haha, It's still a great track! It's just, the grove on that track doesn't seem as "locked in" to me.
Some of it feels kind of awkward in comparison to the surrounding tracks. Still, there are some
awesome moments like you mentioned. My criticism is all relative to how good the rest of the album is.
I should INTERJECT the same way you did! Proxy is such a genius way to open an album.

Proxy is fucking sweet, by the way I was simply stating an opinion. It is fairly obvious that periph and tessy are completely different in distinction to each other. I just think the 2 of those bands are the forerunners of the modern djent movement. If anyone makes a case for volumes their nads are as good as crushed.
