I love Night is the New Day. Not this, though. Bores the fuck out of me. Never delved much into their death-doom stuff, but I think Katatonia for me might be a one-album-band.

I've been warming up a lot to this after rediscovering it with 2017's sweet sounding 10th anniversary thing

The remaster isn't that great tbh. The original sounds incredible.
Also, this is best Katatonia, agreed.

"incredible" is a big word for a compressed brick tbh
not denying that the actual recording sounds ace tho, but there's really no reason to stick to the original imo

It's hardly compressed though? I can hear everything loud and clear. Nothing gets blended in, no loudness war... Are you using good headphones?

It is very well produced and it does a mighty good job at pretending to be a lot more dynamic than what it actually is (though the heavier moments like Leaders give it away), I'll give you that.
But really there are at least 3 better versions floating around, one of which is apparently an easily accessible digital download (but I don't have it). I own the 2017 fancy book thingy and the CD is already quieter than the original (but slightly more compressed than the aforementioned digital download, for some reason), but the real treat is the surround DVD by Bruce Soord who also did the excellent DVD for TFoH.
