an idea of how it'd sound without the vocal effects

I think we all know Stephen needs the vocal effects in order to not suck.

Is that sarcasm? Or a dig at his live performance, which is ridiculously inconsistent?

Ive also heard his vocals are inconsistent live. Ive only seen them once, and he sounded fantastic. I must have got lucky and caught them on a good day.

Yeah, he also was great when I saw him last year
But I've seen some live videos where his voice either is a little shaky (like he doesn't hold a note perfectly for a period of time, which leads me to think they use autotune to smooth things out in studio) and even hits an off note. Then again, there are other examples of videos where he sounds just like in studio (like this one from some radio station where he sings 'Down' almost exactly like studio: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWK7Ww9bIgQ)

Ive heard vocals can be finnicky. I was a music major and one of my friends was in the vocal department and he always made it sound like it just depended on the day for vocal consistency. I'm sure he can sing like that, it might just be tough to do it on a regular basis for an extended period of time (like being on tour for several months).

I wouldn't doubt it. There's so much that goes on to make a good performance that isn't necessarily under the singer's control (like having a cold or something) which is why I get annoyed when people on Youtube say Christian can't sing live. Then again, lol Youtube but still.

Yeah, I think a lot more goes into how vocals sound since it is completely dependent on the vocalist. When it comes to playing an instrument, there's a more mechanical sense to it since a certain portion depends on the player and the rest depends on the quality of the instrument (amps, strings, reeds, quality of the material the instrument is made of, etc.) When it comes to vocals, you ARE the instrument. Its all on you.

This may be the most complete batch of songs Anberlin has ever written, with the exception of Innocent (I can't stand it) and although I really like God, Drugs, and Sex it falls flat as an album finisher after listening to it a few times.

The biggest problem is that Stephen writes demanding vocal lines in songs that often contain an octave jump between verses and choruses (Feel Good Drag, Whisper & a Clamor, Readyfuels, Impossible, Art of War, Paperthin Hymn, Modern Age, you get the idea), vocal lines that bleed into each other (making it impossible to take a breath in between lines) and then, in concert, bounces around like a maniac trying to cope with melodies written for at least two different vocalists, not one.
If he stood still, he'd be able to manage it but without intense vocal training, it's incredibly challenging to manage the juxtaposition of highs/lows whilst jumping around in a leather jacket for two hours on stage. I'm never surprised when he sounds bad doing that. Most people would.
Talented vocalist? Absolutely. Bad steward of his talent while performing? Often.
