I know, I Stay Away is one of my all-time favorite songs, and I always thought Rotten Apple was underrated too

5/4 is pretty simple but it's hard create something natural with it. I use 15/16 and 9/8 easily.

Wow, "The Demon's Name" is surprising. I don't think I've heard Meshuggah play something with sustained picking this fast before...not that I didn't think they could do it, but it's a different sound for them. Pretty cool album so far...not sure if it'll top Nothing or Obzen, but it's interesting for sure. I really like the production...like others said, it's much more organic, and there's some frequencies present that would normally be cut in the studio e.g. low mids (listen to "I am Colossus" to hear the muddy reverberations).

I don't know if I'd agree that it's that much of a departure from their sound...the riffs are still going way over the barlines following various odd time groupings. Maybe it's just better hidden?

@Det_Nosnip- What is really different about "The Demons Name" is it is the only song from Meshuggah that I can think of that is in a triple meter. The verses have definite 6/8 feel to them ( especially if you follow the high hat). The speed and heaviness of this song I think obscures the fact that the triple meter of this song, but this triple meter makes it one of the most unique Meshuggah songs yet.

I stopped reading after that.

You really shouldn't give up on reading so quickly. Believe it or not, it's actually not as hard as it seems.

The polyrhythms and general musical complexity are still here on Koloss, but I think the point was that they don't sound as cold or unnatural, which has been a constant part of their sound for almost 15 years. It's a very organic record for them and the technicality doesn't conflict with that.

I still really hate the production on this record, though. It sounds really flat compared to heavy, bass-filled sounds of ObZen, Re-Nothing, and Catch-33.
