Adam. Music reviews are meant to INFORM others of WHY you hold the opinion that you do, not simply STATE an opinion and leave it at that.
Obviously there's opinion involved, but opinion needs to be backed up, reinforced. And how is this done? By referring to the music specifically, calling upon some kind of STANDARD for why you hold that it's good or bad.
I'll appeal all the way back to the basic: why do you (or any of us) even write reviews anyway? What's the point? What's the motivation? It's because somewhere, deep down inside, you believe that YOUR opinion is the correct one. Just because there's a million different opinions on a subject doesn't mean that they're all wrong.

What I don't understand about the debate surrounding being 'objective' in this thread is that ultimately everything in music that someone asserts is a positive or a negative aspect in a review is in essence an issue of personal opinion. As a reviewer your job is therefore to be honest and to hope that the readership of whatever you're writing share the same kind of outlook on music (not the same exact opinions, but the same wants and needs) as you do.
There are people in the world that don't like messy music like ATD-I and Glassjaw and there are people in the world that don't like relatively clean and straight-and-narrow music (not MOTR, just more simple) like most things recorded on an acoustic guitar. ATD-I are deemed a great band by the people who like furious music and Emery are deemed a great band by those who like their music capable of being transcribed to sheet format.
To this end the point of a review is to analyse something, not evaluate it. This is why scores are a little bit silly, because two people could read an adjective like 'messy' and think entirely different things solely on the basis of their personal preference.
I don't even know why I'm writing this any more, I'm pretty bored.

ill just refer to knott's comment that restates what my opinion is and how i explained why i have that opinion

What we've established in this thread is that a few people have to make a song and dance when things don't ultimately go their way and don't know when to call it quits

Nah but I think it's a genuinely interesting debate to talk about why people review music. But my point is it's essentially the same debate as why any of us come to Sputnik and/or read reviews here. It's not because I read one of Chan's reviews and know that if he likes it I'll like it (I use this example because me and him have stupidly similar taste at times) but I know that the way he sees music generally translates onto my template whereas people like Downer I tend not to sit there and think "I know exactly what that means" as often as I did with this review, which is why I like this review so much.
Some people take the description too far, though, like Greer. Haha.

Well anyways in summation Mr. Downer, i simply thought this review was far too heavy-handed with ad hominem attacks and attempted fancy grammatical flourishes that only served to confuse more than enlighten. Not necessarily too much opinion, just not a balanced opinion and not enough material to clearly back it up. These are the things that made it seem unprofessional.
Then again, you have expressed that your intention is not to be in any way professional, so this may not matter to you. I would only say that the staff tag ought to beg a certain level of professionalism.

Allow me to explain what I said on my last post:
The first three paragraphs
Childish rant about what you think of them. Mentions about the record? Are the guitars good at all?
Is the bass player better than its replacement? The drums, are they sounding good or not? You could
even criticize Eric Valentine's production, there' room to complaint here. A lot of people aren't
kin with Valentine's drums, that's something like public knowledge. But no, there's nothing but a
rant so far. Let's see what you add from now on:
The fourth paragraph
First time you mention one actual song of the new album. And that's the third track. Your review
doesn't take the time to inform anything, you didn't take your time to inform yourself about the
record, you just go in a rant about how Adam is using Christian motifs now, but you picked a song
that doesn't evoke Christian imagery at all.
One paragraph about the use of Christian motifs. Two of your favorite records are Brand New's "The
Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me" and "Daisy". Both you have gone deep trying to understand the
intricacies of them. You've said you think they're better used in your defense. But how can you
tell? How can you honestly tell, if you gave way more time from those Brand New records than this
one? You say the line "Can you imagine Christ hitting a child" completely out of context. You say
it's unforgivable. This from one of the best tracks on the record.
I wonder, "I want to kill and eat my young", in your opinion, is deeper and more thought provoking
than the line on "This Is All Now"? Both are really harsh lyrics, if you ask me, but This Is All Now
and all the other songs on the new record seem to me better crafted than the ones on Daisy.
What brings to the point that killed your review for me:

The last paragraph
You needed to confess your deep love for Brand New at the end. You just needed to. Every big TBS fan
or Brand New fan knows about the feud between these bands. What people may not know is that some
Brand New fans go out of their way and make this very personal. If what I'm writing is a fanboy
vendetta, then your review is an unprofessional review from a huge Brand New fanboy that lost any
credit he could have when it comes about these two bands. You'll never judge them fairly.
You'll praise Brand New. A whole fuckin' lot. Even when they don't deserve to, and piss on TBS, even
when they really deserved it. And you can't prove otherwise, since that even though you claim to
like this band, the highest score you ever gave to them was 3. You gave 3 to TAYF, New Again and
Louder Now, 3.5 for WYWTB. While the less you gave for a Brand New album was a 4, two 4.5s and a 5.
So here it goes, if you wanted me to say more than "this is a childish rant", you got it. Just
reviewed your review. I'll get flack for this, yeah I will. But then, anything people say here gets,
so I won't bother.
