Chortles the criteria were about understanding others opinions not about deciding how to rate music lol
Of course most people here don't give a fud about understanding where others are coming from and just close stuff down as quick as possible but I digress.

Sometimes it's obvious with well known critics - Scaruffi nearly always judges the debut by a band a hell of a lot higher than anything else they release. Why? Because he blatantly values originality above all else. Understand that and you understand what type of music fan he is.
One person's 'refinement' is another persons 'lack of originality'. One person will almost always rate consistent albums highest where another prefers riskier progressive albums. I know what I like. This album is original and authentic but it's inconsistent and unrefined. Horses for courses.

If I was judging this album with preset criteria I wouldn't even need to listen to this to rate it, the accompanying blurb would be enough to know what type of album it is. I don't break down music at all when I listen to it, less than most here as I am not a musician or have any education in that regard. I listen in the same way I'd approach watching a film - I know nothing technical about film making or acting but I know what I enjoy.
But I do have a grasp on why this album isn't my favourite Smith album (I think he got better at writing) but he certainly was never more authentic and original than he is here, and I see the appeal in that.

personally i find this album to be his most folk influenced and I think it plays a major part into why a lot of people consider it classic
this release has some of my favorite lyrics as well

"I don't break down music at all when I listen to it" you just spent four comments dissecting the psychological reasons why some of us like this album more than you do. just fuckin' say "this isn't my favourite" and leave it at that homie
"If I was judging this album with preset criteria I wouldn't even need to listen to this to rate it, the accompanying blurb would be enough to know what type of album it is."
I don't even know what you're trying to say here but I'm 90% sure it's dumb as hell

Row for someone who is supposedly a contributor your strongest quality seems to be the ability to close down discussion quickly.
On this site people love breaking down each other's taste by genre to a degree that I find a little unnecessary/borderline ridiculous, but when I look at other equally important indicators of taste I get shouted down as over analytical.

Anyway, peace out, I probably went too much into this. Some ratings just intrigue me a bit

Either/Or is pretty much as good as it gets for me...by any artist.

personally I've never understood why Either/Or is considered his "peak" by most
for me the emotion and lyrics have much more impact on the preceding albums, and instrumentation wise he exceeds it on the albums afterward

Tbh this guy was so great I can understanding someone making an argument for any one of his albums being his best. For me, Either/Or just seems to capture the essence of him as an artist. Songs like Between the Bars and Say Yes are something else to me.
