I initially found the flute playing really annoying (I was more of a hard rock guy when it came to prog) and I found the vocals and lyricism to be really pretentious-sounding

I find Anderson's lyrics more interesting and thought-provoking than Dylan's (or any other lyricist's) personally.
Anderson's lyrics are rarely pretentious, in fact I think he's only guilty of that on A Passion Play.

I think Heavy Horses (the album) has my favourite set of Tull lyrics, certainly nothing pretentious about those, serving as one of the many reasons why Anderson is my favourite songwriter ever.
