Here's a quote I like:

"The holocaust wasn't the murder of 6 million Jews. It was the murder of one, another, then another."

They were all individuals. And yeah, this album is pretty much about the holocaust.

It's not really about any one topic cause it has obviously personal things in it too as well as things that aren't personal but have nothing to do with Anne Frank or the twins under the pseudonym two headed boy. The holocaust (or rather specific stories of people living in occupied Europe) obviously covers several of the songs but not others.

I think you can kind of group the songs together around loose themes. Like both Carrot Flowers are about the same thing as are Holland and the Two Headed Boys. Oh Comely and Ghost feel like they are in some way linked but Aeroplane and Communist Daughter seem pretty seperate from anything else.

The problem is a lot of the songs seem to be about multiple things at once and everything is written in riddles and metaphors so really understanding exactly what even one song is about it pretty difficult nevermind as a whole album.

On the other hand there maybe a grand plot here it's just hidden so deep no one has ever really been able to piece it together. This Message Edited On 10.31.08

Actually I think there's links to the holocaust and Anne Frank in the title track as well:

There are lights in the clouds

Anne's (in some sites it's Anna, and I can't really hear which one it is) ghost all around

Hear her voice as it's rolling and ringing through me

and

Now how I remember you

How I would push my fingers through

Your mouth to make those muscles move

That made your voice so smooth and sweet

Now we keep where we don't know

All secrets sleep in winters clothes

The "you" there could well be Anne who obviously cannot speak after being killed. And everyone who's read the diary knows that she was intrested in a Jewish boy called Peter who also died in the concentration camp. He could explain the "secrets".

In Communist Daughter I can't really find connections to Anne Frank but connections to the ww2 can still be found. This Message Edited On 11.01.08

A good point, well made. The only problem with this is that is story telling terms all the songs are completely out of order.

Like surely Holland 1945 should precede the title track in this case?

I hate working at the GAP but "Holland, 1945" came on the radio today and I basically love my job now.

Even the lines

And one day we will die

And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea

But for now we are young

Let us lay in the sun

And count every beautiful thing we can see

suggest that because young people, like me, will most certainly not have such a terrible destiny as Anne Frank and the other individuals who died in the holocaust, we need to enjoy life as much as we can since after all it's very short and it probably happens only once to each of us.

And I do think that In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is one of the most beautiful songs ever written being one of the three songs that have made me cry. No, it wasn't the first time I heard it. It was maybe a few minutes after the fifth listen, since I'd listen to the lyrics carefully.. And I just lay in my bed alone and cried for about a quarter of an hour. And I enjoyed it.

You shouldn't be. That's the point of the famous song by The Cure..

"In the Aeroplane over the sea" is very simple and easy to play on guitar though. Even I managed to play it entirely.

No, I don't think so Bleak. There's so many people out there that get barely any emotions of music, exept wanting to shake their bums and get pissed maybe. Those ppl will never end up in sputnik (thank f'uck for that)This Message Edited On 11.10.08

Yeah it's a very enjoyable song to play/sing with an acoustic guitar.
