' and I don't understand why he can't just talk about music'

i just dont think he has any interest in talking about music cos of his taste revolving around obscure shit and hating most popular music (of all genres).

Joker 2019 was a landmark in filmmaking, man. A film for the people

'I can catch some nuggets of actually insightful points in his ramblings but too often he kinda comes across with the edgy "yeah it's fucked up man and so am I, not like you'd know anything about it" kinda vibe'

lol yeah pretty much. he has some interesting ideas but zero interest in communicating them coherently

the controversy around it was a tad ridiculous i thought. i get that it seemed very ambiguous on the whole mental health/lone psycho with a gun front but i think there was plenty of space to interpret it positively

it was alright, but overhated and overrated excessively. media was going "PLEAAAASE DONT SHOOT UP THEATRES YOU INCELS wait why isn't anything happening" and some idiots going "wow best movie ever the Joker is literally me"

I've never had a crippling mental illness before so I can't diminsh what people get out of that front but every other angle seemed drenched in faux-depth

Pretty sure it got negative press for having "incel vibes" at least according to twitter degenerates.

As cringy as this might sound, alot of his commentary on the state of society and how people treat eachother is accurate. How "nobody is civil anymore" and "doesn't put themselves in other peoples shoes"

I guess I can't fault it on that front either

i get what you mean but i feel like a lot of the time faux depth is imagined because it requires an assumption on the part of the viewer regarding the directors intentions.

i get the feeling with stuff like Grimes a lot for example. feels like she thinks her music is very artsy and out there, when it really isnt (i remember seeing an interview where she mentioned never using much acoustic guitar because she doesnt want to be 'basic', and that just made her appear like an actual basic person who thinks wearing weird clothes and kooky aesthetics actually gives her artistic depth)

Going back to Joker i never really felt like it was being presented as more than it really was but i can definitely see how it could seem like it was. The ending always felt a bit unsatisfying for me. Like, shit hits the pan, then thats it. really flat.

There were times where he cranked the edge level to 11, but most of his points are very accurate

That Joker review on Letterboxd that just said “This happened to my buddy Eric” was perfect discourse

lol Delete Forever is played on an acoustic and is the most basic chord progression possible so I guess she grew out of it

Wait wait, Grimes "deleting 'anti-imperialist' off my social media' after I decide to have Elon Musk's baby" doesn't actually hold any personal values?

I listen to Grimes music but not her actual words. It's like she tries to embody the manic pixie dream girl trope and it's dumb. Nothing about her music or her persona is particularly deep. I just visit for cool electropop vibes.

On the subject of Joker, I felt it was being kind of irresponsible with its themes. The way it had juxtaposed really real thoughts about mental health and society letting the bottom fall out from under people with his own progressively inexcusable and unsympathetic actions. Like what is it saying about mentally ill people at the end of the day? 6/10. Maybe 7 on a good day.

Yeah, the fact Todd Phillips told every interviewer he could that Joker's a condemnation of "cancel culture" really shows how seriously anyone oughta take it

lol didnt know this

i think this hits the nail on the head. The ambiguity and openness to interpretation is a blessing and a curse. while usually a strong message weakens a film staying power (nobody likes feeling as if theyre being preached to) it might of have actually helped that one. it would have at least quelled a lot of the controversy

the controversy is what made the film so successful to begin with so I doubt there's any regrets by the filmmakers there
