"

Most people who find this to be good aren't the type who actively explore the genre. For a combination of a sterile dream-pop composition and a janky vocal delivery, it weirdly happens to be popular with the demographics I've mentioned above."

i hope that excludes me? i love the genre

"i hope that excludes me? i love the genre"

That definitely excludes budgie who just loves any forms of dream pop. Hope you're not sleeping on better stuff like Melody's Echo Chamber, Ex:RE, Wild Nothing, Candy Claws, and many other bands/projects who deserve more attention than this band tbh.

Fellas is it gatekeeping to have an opinion

I mean I also love this and probably have heard 100+ dream pop albums, not sure that makes me “the type who actively explore[s] the genre” but I would think I’m more than a dilettante.

FWIW this is probably their least dream pop album so it would kind of make sense if this is more popular/accessible to people who don’t necessarily love the genre. But it’s gatekeeping to suggest that “most” people who like this don’t really like the genre (maybe true just because it’s one of the most popular albums in the genre) in a way that implies that most people who do really love the genre don’t like this, thereby implying that you care at all whether someone is a fan of the genre or not and are prone to skeptical about others’ enjoyment of it. At least that’s how the comment read to me.

Love you boney, your thorough breakdown of how you see my comment is what keeps me going. That's said tho, I just like to trash on this band tbch.

dream pop is one of those genres you've gotta cherrypick like crazy from because loving it wholesale is about the same level as loving painkillers regardless of your physical state and um this is a depression cherry 🍒

i'm pretty picky with my dream pop, and johnny says you have to cherrypick dream pop, sure, but i cherrypick from any genre. blackgaze and black metal i both adore but i dislike albums from those genres more often then i fall in love.

melody's echo chamber is cool but i don't think, well really, i would never opt to listen to melody's echo chamber if the only options are either bon voyage or teen dream. saying true cvlt dream pop is bon voyage and not teen dream is pretty weird. wild nothing is dope though but to go along with your manner of speaking, wild nothing is "entry level"

I wouldn’t call that cherry-picking though per se - the more you know and like a certain style, the more you’re going to know what works for you and what doesn’t. Needing to cherry-pick to me more suggests that the style as a whole generally isn’t that good and that you need to carefully dig to find the gems.

Boney wins! Same goes for shoegaze while we're at it - but ofc being picky for all genres is p important. Just particularly important here ;]

Wild Nothing is indeed an entry level Dream Pop band. So Candy Claws it is then.

Don't we in general cherry pick stuffs tho? As wiseman Ryus once said, "Basically music comes down to: do you like what you hear or not." I had a high expectation of Beach House then I listened to their albums and hated it.
