It's more focused than Colors and less awkward but if you didn't like how self-indulgent Colors was, this won't be any better.

considering my opinions on Colors, would I like this better?
idk Tommy Rogers still sounds like Tommy Rogers. If anything, you would probably like Mirrors or Desert of Song.

i think i should get into these guys.. i have this and colors so we'll see which i like better

should be about the same, bud.

The first half of this album is probably the strongest, most cohesive collection of songs they've put together yet. And then Fossil Genera starts and I wonder how "A Little Piece of Heaven" got there and the whole album gets derailed

Repeated listens aren't doing much - I'm still not quite sold on this album yet. Colors was hit-and-miss but this one ain't doing it for me.
I still love the band though. And I feel I need to reiterate: these people are phenomenal live. YouTube videos don't do them justice. See them now. Their live performances have gotten better over the years. I saw them in September, and it was absolutely perfect. Sounded better than the album. They played White Walls and Obfuscation among others. Unfortunately the audience didn't know who they were
(heard from audience around me)
"Who was that?"
"The Buried I think"
"Oh. They were just okay I guess. Noisy. When's Killswitch coming on?"
I restrained myself from hitting someone's face. In Flames played right after. I didn't have much respect for them or much knowledge on them. Let's just say that after they played I immediately got everything they've done and fell in love...
But back to BTBAM. They need more songs like Selkies. When a song reaches 10 minutes and upwards, it tends to get self-indulgent and boring. I respect these guys, more than most bands I listen to, but I seriously found myself drifting into daydreams while listening. Had to restart songs. That's not good. They'd like to think the album is cohesive, but I found it a little disorganized and unfocused. God knows they make amazing music, but it'd be nice if they tightened it up to the format of their earlier stuff.
On a side note, who else thinks they need another covers album? Amazing stuff they did.
edit: kind of agreeing with duderino. The first 3 tracks are great. I listened to the first two a dozen times when those leaked a while ago. But it really does lose focus right after.

Nomos, I would rather hear their 10 minute wank fests than their 5 minute chug fests of older albums.

your opinion doesn't count, they could fart onto a guitar string, record it through a broken amp and then play it over people throwing up and you'd give it a 5

Their chug fests were awesome though.
Eww really? They're all the same.

Wow hahaha.

Now it seems that 80% of their stuff is progressive and their metalcore roots are fading.
tbh, i thank the Lord everyday for that.

Tommy's screams on TSC sucked. I love that album but his screams were all broken and ugly. I have no qualms with BTBAM being all pretentious and self-indulgent but with them going all out wanky it really hinders the listening experience to me. They had just the right mixture of it to something that resembled songwriting and structure on The Silent Circus and Alaska but then they began to lose me on Colors. Still to this day I only listen to it starting at Sun of Nothing. With The Great Misdirect they just said fuck it, I guess, and while I know that the people who dug Colors probably welcomed this, I liked it better when they had one foot, or at least a fucking toe, on the ground.
