if 4:33 was in movie form it would be more like watching traffic for 2 hours or watching a busy area for a day as opposed to a blank screen.
Which too begs the question, if that would count as filmmaking. All that is a bit difficult (and in a way pointless), but we just have to have certain definitions of words so we can use them. That's the whole basis of language. So even if art often tries to elude classification - and is for the most part a very subjective matter -, we still need to define it and categorize it in some way, if we want to say what "exactly" it is.

Filming traffic is film yes, because it is filmed, but it doesn't tell a story. Likewise, 4'33" is a compsition, and it's definitely art, but it isn't music.

in maths you can start with numbers and end up in infinity - which is a concept, not than number. But then again, in some systems it IS considered a number. Depends on how you approach it.
so 4'33'' is kind of similar to this (or evolution now that i think about it). Silence in itself, is not music. But if you approach it from the music side, following Cage's reasoning, it IS music.

@altertide I'm not too sure, if I can agree on that either. By that rationale, only the approach, intentions and thoughts of the artist would define whether something is music or not. I sure as hell can't say that is wrong off the top of my head, but I can't say that's enough for me either.
Anyway, seems like Cage accomplished one of his missions, people are discussing what the hell 4'33'' is and means.
