Pretty bland album. There's a few good parts, but most of it is trying too hard to be technical. Production isn't all that good either.

Hardly bad enough to complain about though.

I love hard rock and metal but this album had not much unique melody and sounded a little all over the place.

What a shocking review. You don't justify your rating whatsoever and try to cover it up with pseudo-intellectual drivel. Congratulations, you tarnished this album's universal acclaim with a poorly written and contrived mess of pretentious egotistical tripe. I'm led to think you'd written this review before they even released the album.

One of your aforementioned points is "comment on the music", well I'd really try to avoid wielding points such as "poor lyrics" and "convoluted concept" as your only reasoning for giving this album such a poor rating. The music is soundly devised and performed - the flow is barely hindered in any regard and the album progresses and evolves. I've listened to it completely in excess of 30 times - and this is the first Mastodon record to have succeeded in gaining so much listening time from me and it still isn't old. You also made the claim that "Music is available to all rather than people who enjoy specific genres" - well stop contrasting this album with other albums and stop attacking it with criticisms borne on the music you seem to adore. Analyse it as an individual work - from behind the veil of ignorance. Stop contextualising it in regard to the music you enjoy - you just make yourself look like a jargon spewing, baseless cynic.

But that's pretty much what you guys are all about here at Sputnik. Tall Poppy syndrome - get yourselves some attention by blasting an album that doesn't deserve it. That's really quite pathetic in a most literal sense.

Then when someone like me comes along, claim "LOL TROLLED" or some irritatingly pre-composed response about the "objectivity" of reviewing music.

Just get off your god damn high horse and listen to music like you want to, not like its your job. You write reviews non-professionally for a site that is reputed for its attention-seeking contributors. Give your readers something worth reading rather than feigning superiority.

It's not really your job either to review reviews and the people of a website. Don't be here if you don't want to. *analyze

Oh no, I'm quite aware of the amount of well thought-out and accurate reviews on this album, its just that this one happens to be the one that comes up first and contributes to meta-rating websites.

It's not really your job either to review reviews and the people of a website. Don't be here if you don't want to. *analyze

I never claimed it was my job. I'm simply here to argue in favour of a position I support - isn't that the objective purpose of this website?

well, while i disagree with your opinion, and i agree with cocaine's points on page 2, this album's kinda a thin 4 for me.
