I guess every genre has waves but it's just a futile conversation cause I'd imagine many people will disagree about which bands goes where.

True. But for some genres, (Black metal comes to mind) it is widely agreed on. It's hard to disagree on as a "wave" is determined by a period of time and not a bands sound.
