"I feel I should spend some time reallly getting to know this before I dig any deeper, doesn’t feel like the kind of discog you want to rush."

*snaps fingers* hers is the kind of music you need to live with

I couldn’t help myself, I already dug into Ruins but I’m giving both space to grow nonetheless. This definitely reveals new textures with each listen.

Not loving the piano direction from Grouper with a few exceptions, although I guess I don’t love the acoustic guitar driven stuff like this (also with a few exceptions, “heavy water” ftw) either...drone grouper all day

her drone stuff like alien observer is probably the best (although this is real close)

still i like how her tendencies towards drone shine thru on everything she does, acoustic or piano or otherwise

So far as albums go, this is similar timbrally to The Man Who Died in His Boat--same sessions, I believe--but those two are standalones in the discog I'd say. Her two most recent are piano based (also standalones in that sense); and then A I A is like a sonically/melodically "cleaner" version of her earlier drone stuff, with the excellent, electric guitar-based "Headache" and "Water People" singles being the cleanest of all. I feel bad for ignoring her early stuff like everyone else does but it's not quite to my taste I've found. A I A is incredible though

even with my ambivalence towards some of the records, including the piano ones, there's so much joy and wonder in this discog. like "holding" from Ruins....man

I just picked this up on wax too. Jet lag killer (hopefully, help me Liz)!

Her more straight drone stuff is rather dull, and I'm both a Grouper fanboy AND a drone fanboy.

Same here, Kranky from 2013. It's ok quality. I think it's side B? starting with that distorted track made me think the needle was running on dust lol

Ruins and A I A are the only grouper albums I can really get into, find most of her discography uncharacteristically dull (I say that because those were pretty much my first 2 Grouper albums and I assumed everything ruled). There are gems here and there, like "Breathing" from her new album, but overall it's homogeneous airy stuff
