It certainly is. One of my favourite Opeth tracks & that's saying something.

I always try to imagine what it must have been like back in '95 when people thought 'Wow, a pink flower on a metal album and these tracks are really long, let's give it a go' and that super nice drum roll of In Mist gave way to the delicious opening riffs. Not knowing what to expect.
All the 'real' tracks here are top notch, instrumentals are mostly fine.

Well, I can't really say that having this kind of composition in this kind of music was really so unique that Opeth blew people away to that extent due to some albums like Dance of December Souls by Katatonia and North from Here by Sentenced having already existed around the same time period but I'd still say Orchid was an excellent debut.
Besides, this album is nowhere near to the level of hackdom that I tend to levy onto other albums as it does have a lot of creativity, especially on tracks like In the Mist She Was Standing, The Twilight is My Robe and Apostle of Triumph. Also, I think this album as a whole sets itself apart from the albums I just named due to the kind of presence members like Johann DeFarfalla had.

I can see the Dance of December Souls comparison, but North from Here is a totally different beast imho

"I can see the Dance of December Souls comparison, but North from Here is a totally different beast imho"
Yeah, you could be right actually as the latter has more immediacy than Dance or Orchid.

I kinda saw North From Here as a more warped type of melodic death
Like early AtG or Eucharist
Still a bit different tho

Speaking of Eucharist, I have to listen to their stuff again. I recall being unimpressed by A Velvet Creation in particular but I haven't heard it in years. Might start there.

I love the two Eucharist records. A Velvet Creation takes the same strange and unorthodox approach to melodic death like early AtG, even though it's less ghoulish
The production is not the best, but it's still a strangely colorful record in an occult-like way

A Velvet Creation is one of the best melodic bm/dm albums ever.

I could see others not liking it, but it's definitely worth checking out
