That sounds lame, particularly with the old footage (mid 2000-2010) actually looking really good.

Yeah, I actually had the experience that I need to give the newer Mastodon albums some room since it usually took me some time for them to click with me.

New album is an improvement on the previous two and their live show absolutely ruled when I saw them earlier this year. Like a different band than the '10-'13 version.

I wonder if people say their live shows are bad because they play new stuff when they prefer old stuff. Cause that could explain it.

They really didn't have much stage presence until around 2013/14, but the material was so intense that it didn't matter. Then they started playing the chiller new stuff instead of like, Crystal Skull and Iron Tusk, so their lack of...well, anything exciting on stage was really exposed. That was when they were starting to get real popular, too, so I'm pretty sure that's why.

That actually makes for a good analysis. And I don't necessarily mind if they don't have a huge stage presence (a lot of atmospheric bands and the likes don't either because that music doesn't lend itself well to it) I just want the music to sound good and to see them have a good time playing it.

I definitely wouldn't have got to CTS & stopped, the 'Don were on a roll at that point. Regardless of how it eventually worked out (for me, personally) 'The Hunter' was a day one purchase.

I actually wasn't a big fan of CTS when it came out (probably have to re-listen), The Hunter took me some time, same thing for Once More and by then I knew that I shouldn't judge EoS before giving it some time to sink.

They are fun albums with enough cool tracks although as a whole they are inferior to anything pre-CTS.

I listened to The Hunter far, far too much. Waste of time. I admittedly lost interest much quicker in OMATS, just couldn't see it growing on me.

I agree with dewinged. Pre-CTS stuff hits more but I also usually like heavier stuff more.

It's like post-CTS is between 3.0-3.7 depending on mood, context and shit and pre-CTS is between 3.5-4.1

For me it's approximately 4.5 vs 2.5 (on average & not including EoS).

If you don't like Crack the Sky definitely don't. This band got even worse.
