There are few people I rank up with Peart: Hellhammer, Steve Flynn, and Gene Hoglan.

Neil Peart is overrated. Gavin Harrison isn't my favorite drummer or anything but people who think Peart is technically superior to Gavin obviously know shit about drumming.

hellhammer is super over-rated. if i ever saw him playing something over than really fast blasts and really fast fills then i'd be more impressed. i mean he's good but i bet if someone went up to him and was like "play a groove in 7/4" he wouldn't know what the fuck to do.

i agree with this, but peart just has that classic appeal.

Fuck off "Hellhammer is super overrated"... Go listen to Ordo ad Chao... Or DMDS for that matter.

As for Peart, he is the reason metal drumming is the way it is now. His creative fills and rolls combined with his unique placement and mastery of other percussive instruments certainly makes him one of the best.

hellhammer IS super over-rated. those albums are all just super fast deathmetal drumming. i've seen plenty of people do that.

No, they're really not if you listen to them. Frost is faster than Hellhammer, but I'm not saying that makes him a better drummer. Hellhammer not only has speed but also a very diverse range in his drumming and some very creative beats.

And lol at "death metal drumming".

He's great drummer for sure, and an important one in his field too. I just don't get why he's rated that high though. I agree on the classic appeal as well.

i'm a drummer, i'm not retarded when it comes to actual terminology and rudimentary knowledge and i'm also pretty well educated when it comes to theory. but i AM lazy.

the coolest thing he does in this video is the hi-hat snare pattern. then he goes into boring lets see how many notes i can fit in a measure drumming. i just get nothing out of that.

Wasn't really accusing you brah. Just thought it was funny. I mean, you're somewhat correct. Stylistically his drumming is death metal sometimes, mostly old-school though.

Nice one Jethro, but how does that help me understand why he's supposedly one of the 'best' drummers?

Because he is 'The Professor'. Sorry, My english would be too poor for his greatness. Go you tube some of his solos =]

I have, and although I have always thought he was great I was surprised when I recently found some vids where he's using trad grip and playing more challenging stuff. He's excellent but I'm just not that impressed of what I've seen so far. I prefer the finesse, dynamics, complexity and overall touch and style of drummers like Sean Reinert, Danny Carey and (yes) Gavin Harrison in this genre.

And yes, will check out the ones you listed.

I know like 5 drummers being superior to virtuoso Harrison.

edit: at least.
