This has better riffs whereas Leviathan has better songwriting, agreed.

Trilobite is easily one of the best songs they've written.

"but I think the songwriting is a little wonkier and more interesting on Leviathan --> CtS compared to this."

Guys how does the original release of this compare to the re-issue? Just wondering.

I'm now treading through Mastodon's stuff, finally. Eager to listen to Leviathan hard, that album has some jams

This and Leviathan are both amaze dude. Try Crack the Skye if you want to feel like you are floating through a proggy time capsule with added facial hair m/

Is this album underwhelming if I listen to it for the first time having heard all the ones after it already?

Oh good cause I love all their other ones but I heard this ones their most aggressive and unlistenable apparently

It certainly feels a bit harsher on the vocals side and it's sludgy as hell. But i couldn't see anyone disliking this album when they like Leviathan, when it comes to agressiveness and heaviness in general
