Metallica invented thrash metal & technical-prog thrash. Can you dig that haters?

Can't say Metallica invented techprogthrash. Toxik, Forbidden, Coroner, Forte, Mekong Delta, Anacrusis, etc all had albums out before ...AJFA.

can't speak for Forte as I'm not familiar with them, but none of the others were really "prog" yet, except maybe Anacrusis and Mekong Delta (haven't heard either of their debuts in years, don't remember). and I'd say Metallica started having that kind of influence on Puppets. one notable exception you had though was Watchtower. they certainly were doing crazy progthrash early on.

Seattle 89 is one of the greatest live performances of any band ever. They really knew how to put on a good show

Is that the concert where they're playing every song at 2x the original speed?

Yeah, Watchtower was practically demoing most of Energetic Disassembly when Metallica was just releasing Kill 'Em All.

A band that's pretty much forgotten in this account is Destruction when they released Release from Agony a year before and that's pretty unambiguously a tech/prog thrash album. Same with Voivod on Killing Tech. Mekong Delta count too for their debut imo

I’m not too familiar with them but I happened to see them play some special hometown show where they played a few of their records in full and it was a good time. I think that was the last show I made it to.

I'll have to listen to them more because I hadn't even heard of them until I found out they were from my neck of the woods.

I’m super confused. Listening to all 4 80’s ‘Tallica albums has been weird. The progression from KEA to RtL was mesmerizing. Musicianship took like 15 steps forward. Then it felt like they conpletely stripped all the cool neoclassical and innovative stuff for Master whoch really disappointed me. Then here they bring back great soloing but add in odd-meters and constant riff-changes for good measure. Love it. Too bad there is virtually no bass.
