Yeah the improv bits just kinda sound like they’re fucking around with their instruments rather than actually playing true improv. The first three songs are where it’s at for me. Especially Epitaph.

"rather than actually playing true improv"

you don't have to like it but this is sort of a silly statement

what constitutes trve improv? Isn't improvising akin to 'fucking around with their instruments'. I'm lost.

Idk what I mean is improv to me usually sounds like there’s some sort of harmony and cooperation between the band members. Like piggy backing off each other. It just kinda sounds aimless here to me.

Correction “true improv” is the wrong term. I guess I meant “good” improv. Like Talk Talks later albums which are full of amazing improv

a lot of improv is like that but free improv by definition often eschews musical convention (phrasings, any sort of time signature, interplay between members) and whether or not it's aimless or good is sort of up to you. I think it sounds p cool!

Well I guess maybe it’s not for me then oh well. The rest of the record more than makes up for it. I feel it’s a conversation worth having though

me too buddy but usually that would necessitate a level of participation beyond just "why isnt this thing from 1969 like this other thing in a different genre that didnt even exist until 1990" if you want anything meaningful to come out of it. instead most posters refuse to even try to engage with experimental music (substitute for art in general tbh) on its own terms or try to understand it as opposed to simply comparing it to a bunch of arbitrary checkboxes they have in their head about what music should be, or using those to justify that its overrated, pretentious bullshit, "not real music" etc.

it makes far less sense to compare this to talk talk than to compare it to the 60s free jazz and avant jazz that informed it and paved the way for a majority of experimental music ever since, furthermore jazz which arguably sought to explore the very question of the merits of structured improv vs not and even take it to its limits

edit: since this is a new page, the convo was about moonchild (or specifically the illusion) not the album as a whole

great comment, park. I can't always blame that mindset especially when I thought that way for a very long time but I do often find it very frustrating when there's little more than a half-hearted attempt to engage with such art, more often than not only with the aim to poke fun at the artist

the overuse of the word "pretentious" is especially grating, as it just feels like a buzzword to absolve oneself of any sort of closemindedness or, as silly as it sounds, fault in being unable to grasp the intent of the artist

most of us have, no one is born learned and it takes curiosity if not also formal education to break out of the mindset
