There needs to be something there for it to be effective though. This is far more interesting and "open" than say, Damnation, but far colder and less emotive.

What do you mean there needs to be something there? A lot of people like improv based music such as free jazz which has
nothing in the way of focussed song writing. This album actually has a very jazzy feel to it as well so I don't really understand
that argument.

I actually find Damnation colder than this, that album does nothing for me emotionally.

Damnation is more melancholic and emotive while this doesn't have much emotion but lots of interesting

songwriting and more going on musically to make up for it. Both are great but have a lot of flaws,

almost all of which are completely different

yeah i don't dig jazz except for maybe in a live setting. i need for there to be "something there" when i'm listening to an album. for the most part at least

That's fair enough, I'm sure a lot of people prefer more structured song writing to the song writing style of this album but that doesn't mean it's terrible. For me the song writing on here is more interesting than on a lot of other Opeth albums due to its looser less conventionally structured approach.

One of the most interesting aspects of this album is how loose it is compositionally, it has a really open feel to it which certainly isn't a bad thing in my eyes. Song writing certainly doesn't need to be tight and focussed in order to be effective.

indeed. My thoughts exactly.
