i don't think it's much like this one at all actually. yeah, there are no growls and yeah, its prog, but beyond that they're pretty different. this time around they took jethro tull and king crimson's dicks out of their mouths

I'll just go ahead and give you the most unpopular opinion ever on this site

This is better than Pale Communion.

The biggest Opeth fanboy on the site thinks that too, so not so unpopular. They're pretty close for me too but I like Pale Communion more

Yeah the KC influences are more obvious on the new one so basically the opposite of what Emyay said. And this doesn't sound even remotely like Tull other than one moment in Famine (the flute solo), which I wish they hadn't included cos it doesn't really work.

Both have had a lot of replays and time to sit with me, and I still consider PC much more diverse and consistent and enjoyable, but this also has so much great and interesting stuff too that it's close

The songwriting here is just sporadic and unfocused, Pale Communion is much more engaging and dynamic

One of the most interesting aspects of this album is how loose it is compositionally, it has a really open feel to it which certainly isn't a bad thing in my eyes. Song writing certainly doesn't need to be tight and focussed in order to be effective.
