Yeah it's a mild stretch, but he was easily more distraught then most band members are about break ups. I don't know the exact reasons that they broke up so I'll hush up.

Essentially it seemed to come down to John deciding he'd had enough and wanted to move on to other projects. The problem is, it seems like he sort of decided that out of nowhere without really talking it over with the others

That's an incredibly unfair decision. The other members hold just as much importance as he does. Doesn't seem like he really cared about his band mates.

I am almost at the end. I am not digging it that much tbh. The drummer has some really low moments and the growls are not my cup of tea. Some passages are cool, remind me of Alcest, but overall I don't think I'll jam it a second time.

As far as I know that's not completely true.

He always would have loved to have Agalloch as a full time band but this never worked out due to the other members. That was always a struggle in the first place. And then he came to them and asked them to do a "big" European tour and play The Mantle in full length but the ressonance was really bad and so he realized that it doesn't make sense anymore.
