they're just doomy melodeath tracks composed of riffs recorded individually and haphazardly stapled together into 10 minutes pieces with little sense of structuring #fightme

it just sounds like mike recorded a bunch of riffs in the studio then sat at the soundboard or w/e just stapling them together into tracks instead of actually writing music that flowed between sections :p
like on Advent 1 min in, riffs fade out, new section begins, 3:18 same thing again. there's just an awkward crudeness to the general songwriting that feels like they wrote music in small sections and then pasted them all together into songs and didn't try to make the transitions that smooth most of the time. Newer Opeth had a bigger budget so it sounds more fluid.

Sounds pretty good for a dude messing around with a soundboard

i'm just reminded of the story about metallica with james writing riffs and then lars supposedly cutting them up and arranging them into the actual songs. feels kinda like that. this 2-min bit goes here, then uhh this riff one goes next, etc until it's about 10 mins, then quit. Boom Opeth song.

But, even if it's true, what's wrong with a riff-fest anyway? Morningrise is top 3 or so Opeth and Orchid isn't too far behind. Morningrise especially feels so organic, could never tire me.

the constant transitions from electric to acoustic where they have that noticeable little pause between them every single time just gets on my nerves. Those first two records were obviously done on a budget by a young band so it should be expected there'd be limitations to the recordings, but it just irks my faux-OCD a lil bit :p I did just bump Morningrise to a 3.5 tho ;;;)))

I really hope to never get music related OCD that severe, I’ve often been guilty of over-thinking things. Morningrise isn’t ‘technically’ flawless yet it is actually perfect, for me at least.
