I'm hearing some new things in the remaster...ways the bass and clean guitar play off each other, little guitar licks that were lost in the blurrier mid-ranges. it's definitely mixed clearer, but it all sounds uncanny valley and so far I prefer the original, especially for the drums.

I love remix and remasters. They're kind of my thing. Having said that, I'm not a fan of the Veil of Maya remix at all. Granted, you can hear some new things for sure, but it sounds so flat and lifeless.

Agree with Willie, it sounds lifeless. Clearer doesn’t mean better in this case, unfortunately

feels like they’re doing that opeth thing of “well we’ve grown up and extreme metal is for children so we just make lifeless yacht rock now”
the remaster really sounds like they’re trying to kill any connection they had to death metal, which was the singular thing that made this band even slightly remarkable.

Ascension Codes is pretty remarkable tho!
Remixes can be really fun, I myself am glad to own Trace Remixed for the occasional listen, but Focus is already a rare album to own and now I really hope ReFocus won't deal the killing blow to the original version of it.
Anyway, for a silver lining, I'm curious to hear more songs like Celestial Voyage and Sentiment with louder guitars and probably certain louder vocals too in the latter

>so we just make lifeless yacht rock now”
except their lifeless yacht rock is still way better than most of whats being peddled as "prog metal" these days idk

The snare drum in remastered Veil of Maya sounds funny/anything but optimal.
This album is in no need of remaster.

I just feel like messing with scott burns production in general is heresy. it’s why I hate those death remasters so much. that sound IS death metal. why tf change it?

Listening to those new Pestilence remasters is weird. Only one that I think I prefer is Spheres.
The idea of this getting remastered is weird though, I like how it sounds already.

At least both versions are available, that’s the thing about the Death remasters that bug me. At least give me the option to compare the two.
I used to dislike this album’s production but I think the roughness of the guitars really adds to the atmosphere

Remasters almost always sound worse.

Pestilence remasters genuinely slap tho, especially Malleus

"the remaster really sounds like they’re trying to kill any connection they had to death metal, which was the singular thing that made this band even slightly remarkable. "
what a load of utter nonsense. of course the band was remarkable in so many more ways. even saying that the death metal element of their sound was unnecessary and felt tacked on would be a fairer statement.

I love hyperion but he’s got a hardon for hating this band his cynic takes are honestly just amusing at this point
