In fact, I think Kreator’s the reason I have the negative bias toward Slayer that I do. I remember listening to Pleasure to Kill and being like, “holy shit, this is way more brutal and intense than the other thrash of that era. Hell, it’s practically death metal already”

slayer aren't that good because you prefer melodic and progressive thrash instead of "who did it faster", but you're biased against slayer because kreator were heavier and faster?
there were a lot of bands in 86 pushing the limits: dark angel, sadus (demo only but clearly there), devastation (the chicago one not the texas one), poison, nme, vulcano, necrodeath, sepultura (though i think their early stuff is also sloppy and overrated but yea)

I think you pretty much explained my points though. Yes, I do prefer the more proggy or technical bands, but many of the bands you mentioned did beat Slayer in terms of intensity and brutality. The central problem I have with Slayer is that they don’t have much for me to latch onto, even regarding the Big 4. More dense and interesting songwriting? 80s Metallica. More technical playing? Megadeth. More fun and groove-inspired work? Anthrax. I just feel like Slayer’s “niche” was filled better by other Death/thrash metal artists at the time, like Possessed, Kreator, etc.

I was never real fond of Slayer from what I have heard of them, but Seasons in the Abyss is pre cool
I actually like Megadeth the least out of the Big 4, tho, because I just can't really seem to get with Dave's vox, no matter how many times I try. Hell of a guitarist, tho

I'm a Thrax and Slayer man through and through, seen both live a few times each and man do they kick fucking ass. Saw them both on Slayer's farewell tour a few years ago and had a blast. Slayer fans are smarter than the average Metallica fan, of that I'm certain. lol

I’m a Metallica and Megadeth man through and through. Slayer not so much and anthrax certainly not. I actually like show no mercy much more than anything else slayer have done because of its songwriting and variations in tempo and more interesting drumming and guitars. I’ve tried anthrax so many times to see what I’m missing and I just don’t like their music. I’ve seen all 4 numerous times to solidify opinions.

Metallica was my first favorite band. Still one of my favorites. From there, Slayer prob my second fave cause the first five albums. I love RiP and PSBWB but I don't really dig many other megadeth records. Same with Anthrax besides AtL and StD.
