And no I was introduced to Kendrick through m.A.A.d City and this definitely wasn't my favourite hip-hop album of the year and I do listen to hip-hop in general with K.Dot being nowhere near one of my most listened to artists in the genre.

most music in general is pretty bad or mediocre, regardless of popularity.

also, i don't see anything wrong in listening to what's popular because it's popular. it's easier to connect to others musically if you have common popular bands.

popular bands and music have an important influence in the rest of their culture. catching up on the latest big albums is pretty important in that aspect. when good kid came out, the entire popular hip hop community was talking about it. how it was changing the face of hip hop, how kendrick challenged everybody or some shit like they - and i had no idea what they were talking about until i heard the album, and yeah it was pretty amazing.

as long as a person is genuine about how they feel about said popular albums - meaning that they don't say they like it to look cool, but they say they like it because they just do, regardless of whether or not they would've ever heard of it if it weren't popular.
