I like the idea of Exodus in the big 4 instead. Feels like they're more intertwined with the other three with Kirk being a founding member and Gary Holt filling in for Hanneman all those years.
Also, did people actually call the big 4 "the big 4" before they all started touring together under that moniker? Or did the bands just call themselves that and it caught on?

I think it was the media...and because those bands were the biggest in terms of sales.
Never really understood why Anthrax was more popular than Exodus or Testament.
But that's how it goes...
In France, we had ADX and Sortilege in the early 80s snd those 2 bands got overshadowed by crap bands like Trust for some reason...Sortilege was as good as Maiden, that's crazy.

Anthrax had some classics too though. Among the Living and Spreading the Disease still hold up to this day, and Persistence of Time fits really nicely into that “prog-thrash” trend that was going on at the time

Yeah i'm not saying Anthrax sucks or anything but to me, Testament is much better...though i'd argue it's also better than Slayer so :')

Yeah, Slayer’s my least favorite of the Big 4 overall. Never thought they were that great outside the first three albums with a few exceptions

I....I can't hang with that.

I know... I always feel like an outsider when I say that. But in my opinion the slower Slayer got, the shittier they got. All they really had were speed and shock value, and when those are gone, what else is there? At least the other 3 bands had more depth and more well-written music from the get-go

nahh
its ok to not like them, but slayer's use of chromatic riffs on reign in blood was pretty groundbreaking for the genre, hence why theyre considered important for dm as well (a lot of bands took cues from that). and hanneman's leads up to and including seasons were... never really replicated by any other band that i know of? so slayer def had a unique sound going before they went to shit

even hella waits was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more interesting than what almost any other band was doing in 85 other than like five or so, and i say that as someone who thinks its the weakest of the good slayer records

I understand that, but a lot of that is referring to those first three albums that I actually do love. To me, it’s after that that they fell off and never really recovered. I do appreciate Reign in Blood’s contribution to death metal and I’m still a huge fan of it, but I just don’t think the band’s discog after that album was really that interesting or good... again, with the exception of a few albums like Christ Illusion for instance

south and seasons, whether deliberately or not, kind of expanded on the atmosphere without discarding the thrash
i get that slayer fans tend to be dumb as fuck and they prob overrate and posture hard, but having slowly gone through this entire bloody genre since i came back, i gotta say their early stuff is pretty unique still

As I said, I knew a lot of people wouldn’t side with me anyway. I think I just prefer the more melodic and progressive sides of thrash in general. Because when we start delving into the more extreme bands of the genre, it suddenly becomes a battle of who did it faster and more brutally than everyone else. Personally, I’d rather focus on the songwriting over the other stuff

yeah i think slayer's songwriting just beats the shit out of bands like agent steel and whatnot, as well as kreator for that matter in terms of "extreme" bands

most thrash bands were derivative as fuck, even to call them discount metallica would be giving them too much credit
slayer were not

I think Pleasure to Kill beats the shit out of most of Slayer’s stuff, but to each his own

songwriting wise it doesn't because it's sloppy as fuck even the drums are off at times lol
but that it gives it its own feel and aesthetic thats way better than shit like coma of souls at least
