his live vocals haven't been anything like the records in years, so it won't get much worse

it's pretty fascinating to hear how he sounded live in the Jane era vs now:

What does cupping actually do?

Well it makes it the sound a lot more contained. I imagine he does it so he doesn't have to scream as loud and hard. Tbh i bet he could still pull off some vocals similar to the jane doe era, he just doesn't do it because it would just put too much strain on his vocal chords.

There are quite a few singers who use different techniques live than on the record to save their voice these days.

He seems to use a lot more force these days compared to the 2001 video though. I think Kurt has said somewhere that Jake has destroyed his voice over the years and that he is a much deeper singer now because of that.

If you go to a Converge show expecting to see good vocals, you'll be sorely disappointed. If you go to a Converge show hoping to have your testes/boobies sonically ripped right off, your desires shall be fulfilled.

has anyone who has ever listened to a converge record gone to a show expecting good vocals?

Jake's vocals (on the records) are part of the appeal for me. they have a pretty unique sound to them

those two videos that lelle posted are pretty interesting.

it's pretty obvious how much more he puts into his performance to achieve the same level of intensity in the second video as in the first. the first one it seems so effortless. pretty insane to see the difference in stage/venue as well, and how far they've come from their scrappy hardcore roots.

I don't care how objectively shitty Jacob's vocals are, they're probably the most emotional and genuine vocals I've ever heard, and that's all that matters

His animalistic harsh vocals are by far one of my favourite

Yeah man, this is a major grower, just like Axe to Fall. I thought "Wretched World" was rather gay the first time I heard it, but now it's grown to be one of my favorite songs on that album.

I have Axe to Fall on cd but couldn't get into it for years until fairly recently. That pretty much applies to all of their material
