I have a preference for high levels of tonal musicality, creativity and experimentation. I enjoy strong and meaningful lyrics, but the music itself can override bad or average lyrics. I also value transitional flow between songs and a unique and creative theme that can be derived from the album as a whole.

Who would be a better 4th?

Testament, Exodus and Annihilator.

I think Anthrax was just there at the right time, tbh.

@alamo: 100% agree.

Some would argue about Overkill as well...and a few other bands like Kreator or Sepultura.

The fact remains that Anthrax was probably there a bit earlier than most other bands and that's why it's in the big 4. I think i like most of the other bands i cited more than Anthrax tbh.

I wasn't referring to exodus in particular. I meant than most other big thrash bands at the time.

Also, ideally shut the fuck up.

I respect Anthrax but agree they shouldn't be part of the "big 4". Granted I'm not a huge thrash fan, but my vote would go to Testament by a long shot, even if my heart wishes it was Death Angel.

I don't believe in the big 4. My big 6 is

Metallica, Black Sabbath, In Flames, Norma Jean, Darkest Hour, and Every Time I Die

I guess I always figured The Big 4 were more the ones that got commercially successful, not necessarily the "best" the genre had to offer at the time
