I can't much about their whole discog, but Litany is a great straight up death metal album to me. The track The World Made Flesh has killer riffs and a phenomenal solo.

Truth be told, I've never really checked out Vader. I've always known of their work, but never actually listened to them for some reason

They're definitely just meat and potatoes dm. This is better by a wide margin, but Vader just have fun headbanging vibes.

I maybe like 1 or 2 tracks overall that I've heard and the rest is a complete blur as far as Deicide. traditional death metal not mixed with other stuff just kinda doesn't feel like it...says anything meaningful at all. and maybe it's not supposed to, but I feel like at least hardcore punk in its sameness was about making a statement and I don't get that out of normal ass plain death metal.

like yeah with deicide, morbid angel, etc. you'll get a "fuck god" here and some fictional gore lyrics there but like, Death when they started doing shit about the human condition and, well, Individual Thought Patterns so to say, and turned into a prog-death band with hints of tech is infinitely more appealing to my psyche than say, Scream Bloody Gore / Spiritual Healing. Leprosy's the peak of that era anyway.

I'd probably enjoy the fun moshbro stuff more in a live setting but just sitting at home is NOT the right setting.

^ See, I was soooooo close to fully getting on board with this, until you got to the Spiritual Healing jab. To me, SH was absolute leaps and bounds ahead of SBG or Leprosy. It saw the band introducing the more introspective and societal lyrics that would define the rest of their career, as well as bringing in the more techy and proggy elements that they'd experiment with until Chuck's death. I'm starting to get really tired of the SH hate, tbh

Also, I would like Leprosy much more if the drum work wasn't irritating as hell

Believe me koris i went in hoping I'd like Spiritual Healing more but idk something wasn't doing it for me. I think it may be the production. 80s/90s extreme metal production is just weird to me, particularly the Morrisound movement. I'd say Symbolic is one of the best produced death metal albums of its time and fairly well deserving of its average even if I really don't revisit it often.

Maybe you just don't dig dm? It sounds like it has to have a lot of genre crossover value to appeal to you, which is fine, but at some point you have to acknowledge the fact that because there's a huge percentage of the traditional genre that you don't like, it looks as if you're just not a fan of the genre. Again, which is fine, you'll dig some prog death here and melodeath there etc, but the average dm album that gets released you're gonna find boring as hell, which speaks more to your personal taste than the quality of said album in the eyes of someone who actually appreciates the genre itself

"death metal not mixed with other stuff just kinda doesn't feel like it...says anything meaningful at all"

i was thinking of something snarky to say but honestly i just feel kinda bad for you. theres so much good music out there that isnt trying to be important or say anything. youre really missing out on a lot of great stuff by approaching it that way.

but then again everyone is entitled to their own taste, so do your thing.

@evil: that makes sense. i think at its core, musically black metal provides more elements that I like at its core than death metal, it's just a matter of finding stuff that has decent production, and hopefully not made by sketchy nazi dudes.

@hyperion: there's still stuff i like that is comparatively "meaningless" / "dumb fun" (it's probably a very reductive way of looking at it but that's how it comes out to me), but i find it lacks the staying power and connection i get from stuff that i can connect with on more than "oh this riff is cool" and "this drummer is talented."

Plus i just don't like the super showoffy nature of some styles (i.e: power metal) that prioritizes being "the best at their instrument" over other elements musically. it's also a matter of feeling like i need time to process what the hell I'm hearing so certain styles are too unrelenting to let that happen.

@venin: Idk, harsh sounds at face value are a means of venting negativity in a lot of ways, for me at least. And I just enjoy it, the abrasion and chromaticism of certain kinds of music scratch an itch that nothing else will. Probably the case for a lot of others that enjoy those styles of music, I'd wager. And with dm, if you look at the vocals more like an instrument the same way mfs do with Young Thug, it becomes about how compelling the orchestration is for a lot of the stuff. And it may all be unmelodic and distorted, but there is still an infinity of possibilities within that framework.

A lot of dm bands have introspective or commentative lyrics, and it's always welcome and makes the music better when they do, and a lot of them don't as well. But hearing it in itself is comparable to watching horror movies. Some are deep and have something to say, and are just aesthetically pleasing or thrilling in some morbid way. And then it's also possible to appreciate the sounds for their own sake, like classical music, electronic music, or jazz. Those genres don't SAY anything verbally, but they convey emotions and atmosphere all the same.

Idk, it seems like loud music that's also has some melodic aspects speaks to you more and that's perfectly okay. It's good to that you're testing yourself with stuff outside of that realm though.

I also don't need the music I listen to to make a statement or anything like that. Everything about dm makes me feel great. The riffs, the atmosphere, the vox, all of culminates into a feeling that I can't really describe but need more of.

Music is also a huge release for me. Helps me relax after a long day. Plus it's cool bonding with people with similar taste. Half the time I dont even pay attention to lyrics anyways. I consider the vocals to be another instrument the lends itself to the total aesthetic. There definitely are cases where I read lyrics but it's hardly necessary for me.

Tbh I'm the type who'll take purely instrumental over music with vocals if I don't want to deal with lyrics usually.

Usually I have to already be already drawn in by the general sound of something before I even care about lyrics, at least for the past few years. There are artists I adore where I've never read the lyrics or it took me a year or more to finally read them.
