Definitely. Has the lot, groove, riffs, quality verses, soaring choruses.

I remember the guitar player of the band I was playing with at the time this released brought the CD to the studio a few days after it came out. We sat down, listened to it and didn't get to play our shit for weeks after. Mastodon's mic drop moment.

Some top nasal whining on this album

Spiralling up through the crack in the sky-ee-i

Leaving material world behind

Oblivion packs so much in for a 5 minute tune, one of my favourites.

That Oblivion chorus is brilliant, yeah.

One of my favourite vocal performances by Brent.

Truth is this album is probably the first time they started to write real lyrics that told a story as well rather than just random phrases. If anyone wants to tell me what Capillarian Crest is about I’ll be grateful lol

Blood Mountain is about a pre-human creature (the wolf loosed in the opening song) taking a hallowed object (the crystal skull) to the top of a mountain to achieve the next stage in evolution. So in Capillarian Crest he begins to witness energies and mystical forces colliding ("Universal dreams / The unseen essence / Energies refreshed") and has visions of himself completing the quest ("Carve, carve out your soul / Lay it on the altar / And leave us here all alone").

So each song on that album is a trial the character faces on the way up. The Cysquatch is a spirit guide who warns him ("enter the labyrinth / visions of the hunted / beware the Birchmen"), and the Colony of Birchmen and Hunters of the Sky are ensuing perils. In Siberian Divide he is starving and hallucinating, and has to eat his own flesh to survive until he finally reaches the summit to fulfill the prophecy ("Snow queen, hypothermia, ice lips, hallucination / Landscape ebb and flow / Think I felt the end of time / Skulls aglow as crystal shines").
