Honestly imagine this with the singer of Galleons

imagine this but with the singer of The Jesus Lizard and the guitarist of The Jesus Lizard and the bassist of The Jesus Lizard and the drummer of The Jesus Lizard, then you'd have The Jesus Lizard yay

honestly the pop sensibilities would work perfect with Spencer Sotelo too

ROFL, yeah, and they would look at this album thinking, what have we done man...
They would probably change the band name afterwards too.

They get the edge because Matt Halpern is a beast

and Spencer Sotelo is my 3rd favorite lead singer. So that's where my bias comes tbh.

The whiny power tenor is so played out in this kind of music so honestly it’s kind of refreshing to hear a deeper voice. It’s just a shame that he’s trying to do so much annoying American idol bullshit all over it

@Ectier: it was threatening to go 3.5 because DYWTYLM was not doing anything for me anymore, but some songs still hit too much to go that low. kinda settled on a 4 because the ambition is commendable and i still love chokehold, title track, and others.
@botb: i can see why that would be refreshing. that "whiny power tenor" has probably the most pronounced emotional effect when i listen so i don't mind it. i think it's the R&B hybrid that saves him compared to even more annoyingly "look how low my voice is" vocalists; looking at YOU, Corpse.

vessel has sounded straight unlistenable their second ep onward, and jamming their very oldest stuff and hearing him sing normally there, illustrating that his stupid voice is entirely put on, made me sour on him like 10x more

so basically in your eyes he's to this style what most bro-country singers are to that style? tbh i see it closer to how T-Pain does something different with the autotune on purpose to give his older music a different vibe.
Sometimes I intentionally sing outside of my usual style if I think it serves the song. If I'm writing a country song I'll probably emphasize my already existing light southern accent if it makes it sound better. Not going full Tyler Hubbard but I'm sure a midwest=emo-country hybrid would be intriguing to SOMEONE.

I like both emo and country, but I'm not sure how much I'd like a fusion of the two. lol

Just imagine something like Understanding In a Car Crash but a bit slower and with a bit more twang. That's how I'm looking at it.

so anyways, to the musicians on this thread what are you all doing to further the genre-bend agenda?
|

Octave pitch-shifting slide guitar to crudely emulate pedal steel, run through bitcrusher and a shitton of reverb, climactic accompaniment to house song lfg
And yeah what I've heard that draws from both emo and country universally sucks

"Octave pitch-shifting slide guitar to crudely emulate pedal steel, run through bitcrusher and a shitton of reverb, climactic accompaniment to house song lfg" sounds interesting, hope to hear it someday!
"And yeah what I've heard that draws from both emo and country universally sucks" if it's drawing from bro-country i can see it but i can imagine it working if you take from the classic soulful stuff, the George Jones/old Hank/Cash/Stapleton of the world
