The only clip I've seen of Grimes talking is her Nardwuar interview, she seemed decently likable. Idk why people expect her to be smart though lol

it's great to be secure in your art or whatever but musicians vastly overemphasize the profundity of their lyrics, as though at the core of it all they aren't just bad poems elevated slightly by the musical context. only exceptions would be maybe songwriters who were decent poets first (e.g. leonard cohen)

kind of agree to some extent

If the majority of this site's users didn't cringe at my politics that'd be a huge red flag so thank god.

Testament to how superficial 90% of the shit that’s turned out now is. It’s all film-flam. Pioneers and genuine artists are no more. Welcome to the world of the superfluous commodity clone with one brain cell giving you nothing and making you connect to even less and which sowing will probably 4.5.

I agree Johnny but I don’t think lyrics are elevated slightly by musical context, they’re entirely carried by musical context, and usually have almost no impact without the musical context. Like if you just write “I’m not fucking around” on a piece of paper it’s not impressive, but when Sufjan sings it at the end of I Want To Be Well it’s a powerful moment

idk, i think now we're getting into a mitch hedberg "do the pants hold up the belt, or does the belt hold up the pants" comparison in that case. like, i don't think you're actually disagreeing with me here
the extent to which they are elevated / carried depends on the quality of either/or i guess
