The debut was unique though. The recent pop "band" albums are just so bland, especially now that Tame Impala are a thing. No noise in em anymore

eh I forgot mgmt were a thing

"if you want to listen to a band it won't itch that scratch"

Doof you're just full of bad opinions today

I still think it made sense for AnCo to release a near-conventional pop album - so I respect this album a lot.

It must have been the hardest to 'make work' - and it does work. If it didn't 100% sound like a good time it would have sold two copies. Fair play to them, many have fallen at this hurdle, a moment now for the fallen dead.

Sandwich - it's a bleedin bedroom tape. Basically a solo lo-fi effort that just happens to actually be a duo lo-fi bedsit electronic home studio embryonic give-it-a-go.

This is a band releasing songs with pressure to be a band unit and play on stage and sell records and have photo shoots and be a band.

Today I learned that bands are only bands when they're "pressured to play on stage and sell records and have photo shoots"

That's definitely why it's different and why they can't really be compared sure

I'm surprised 'Spirit' is considered a high point for albums of that type (lo-fi noise electronic stuff) because only half of it is really any good - and I'd think this is better within its fileld (whether you respect that field...) because this sh'ts over Tame Impala or most any of the other indie pop albums of the time imo.

"lo-fi noise electronic stuff" How much avant noise pop from the 90s have you listened to?

Sandwich - you do know that 'Spirit' is sometimes listed under Avey Tare and Panda Bear not AnCo?

My point that you're choosing to ignore that the only reason we're even talking about AnCo in 2018 is they made this album otherwise the band could have changed their name to 'footnote' by deed pole. They tried to make a pop album - they weren't trying to do that on 'Spirit' ye gods - they were just kicking ideas around and seeing what sticks at that point, trying to get up the greasy pole of getting noticed. They were one of the biggest 'alternative/indie' acts in the world recording this (seems strange saying that now)

The intentions behind both was different and to say 'Spirit' is a true AnCo album is just strange.

My point was if 'Spirit' is getting 5/5 ratings within the genre then maybe I don't want to - it's an album I listened to an awful lot during my AnCo obsession years (I listened to it more than Sung Tongs) but it really fell in my estimations as time went on. Simplicity can be good but it just becomes grating. A few songs are really great (t/t, untitled, penny dreadfuls) but most of the rest is classic 'two parts in a song that don't work for every one part that does'. It's more interesting/educational than anything else. Not the most enjoyable for me chaps.

Okay, I'm not actually gonna write an essay but

"My point that you're choosing to ignore that the only reason we're even talking about AnCo in 2018 is they made this album otherwise the band could have changed their name to 'footnote' by deed pole."

Fake fan confirmed.

Again I think you purposefully miss the point you rascal

This was clearly the album when even your dear dad knew who AnCo were - it’s their ‘Q Awards’ album.

And in that bracket this album is dynamite.

I prefer ‘Strawb Jam’ and maybe ‘Feels’ too, but this was the one that cemented them in the mainstream consciousness. It was a ‘big album’.

If you don’t get one of them you are ‘footnote’ basically - in terms of yer mainstream pop culture. So to compare this to a bedsit ‘just above demo quality’ fuckabout (however great in that field) is perverse.

"just above demo quality" tf its 2019 who isnt making music in their bedroom. Why does this magically make the work less serious. Also its definitely not lo-fi
