Aside from Coil, Burden and Lotus Eater the songs just sound long and boring for me. Just can't get into this at all, there's a distinct lack of good riffs

This album is definitely more about atmosphere and experimentation compared to everything in their back catalog. If only they had continued in this route without abandoning what made them so unique in the first place....

Although paying tribute to prog and rock music of the 70s, Heritage still felt very much like an Opeth record, and that's what made it such an effective, accomplished and meaningful album in my opinion.

The wonderful, rich textures running through it, the lush, haunting and medieval atmosphere driving its sound, everything is there. Except the growls and the riffing. And I honestly don't see how those two elements are "what made them so unique in the first place", or at least how they ultimately define their music. Wether it be classic prog and jazz or death metal, it's still just a screen to project their actual characteristic sound, which undeniably plays a huge role in the music of Heritage.

At least that's how I see it.

Now, I wouldn't say the same about Pale Communion, but that's another story.

I was alluding more to Pale Communion than Heritage, and I agree 100% with you on Heritage.

It was the first Opeth I heard so I'm kind of nostalgic about it ahaha

But I think vocally this is their best album and it's really dark and almost cinematic at times

Nah dude MAYH or Morningrise for best vox on an Opeth album for sure.

This still slays though. m/

MAYH is probably second best but Morningrise has really weak cleans imo.

On here, the growls are guttural af and the cleans are as expressive and effortless as they ever were

The first album of theirs that I heard was Heritage, it might be a weird introduction, but just as you, it has stayed among my favourites.

Well, jamming this at the moment I must say I had forgotten how actually refreshing it sounded.

Turned out to be a favorite Opeth record (even though I love all of them).

This is towards the middle for me, which goes to show how consistent/awesome their discog is.

They have quite a few bad albums tbh but Heritage isn't one of them.
