I'll never get it. one of the best prog metal albums OAT. I'm guessing it's just not what a lot of death fans want to hear

To Forgive Is To Suffer's intro is forever stuck in my brain because it was the menu music of some weird pirated Ukrainian version of CS:Source I played on in 2007 or so.

look, I’m not surprised this is popular. It’s sludgy, proggy, intense and one hell of a ride, but unfortunately while Death hits the notes, the notes themselves are not straight, dare I say wonky, maybe?

been listening to this one quite a bit.......album has a much better flow without painkiller.......those last few minutes of Clarity is a perfect ending to the record

Yeah Chuck’s outro solo on A Moment of Clarity is so perfect. The last few minutes of that song always get me little emotional. I agree about Painkiller, I usually stop before that track for exactly that reason and just treat it like a sort of bonus song rather than part of the album proper.

Painkiller is indeed a filler, gotta say tho, the best possible positioning for a filler track

also this is quite clearly top 3 Death, kinda remarkable how many people "dislike" this recently

Damn I just came across some versions of these songs where Chuck is doing clean vocals on YouTube.

I guess maybe they were meant for Control Denied originally. I definitely prefer the harsh vocal versions but pretty interesting to hear.

Yeah, some of the songs (Spirit Crusher, Bite the Pain, Story to Tell, and A Moment of Clarity) were originally intended for Control Denied, but contractual obligations and all that, so Chuck used those for this album and a few new songs.

And idk about you all but I can jam any Death album all day long, except this one; I need to really be in the mood for prog to enjoy it. Symbolic, ITP, etc. all have prog influences, but this is pretty much entirely prog. The vox also held this back for me for while, and I still find them quite grating. I'd def prefer if Chuck used his typical vocal style here. I still enjoy it though, just not nearly as much as other Death albums.
