i dont think people realize how many bands rip eachother off...all deathmetal sounds very similar...all metalcore...its all similar and other bands steal ideas from other bands.

the only thing that makes this sound like a generic metallica album is the vocals...you wouldnt catch metallica dead playing half of these riffs...its not that close to there style. but its a well thought review of a negative opinion of the album.

and for my opinion...i think the album is pretty good.

I do hope you realize how much of a flamefest you're setting yourself up for.

i have a feeling itll be quite the flamefest...i would just think i could have my opinion without the criticism...considering i respect all you who do not like the album and/or trivium.

but as we all can see...people like to put other people down about what they listen to...so im expecting if i come back in about 2 days...there will be alot of comments telling me i suck and need to listen to real music.

The issue here is that you're creating a gross overgeneralization of other people's music. And no matter which way you slice it, that's not good. I don't give two shits about it being your opinion. If you're going to say something like that, you better be prepared to back it up.

And especially on a site like this with listening parties, links to sample songs, and a healthy and active forum community, you have no excuse for not having done an ounce of real research.

Anyone notice that people don't back up what they say all the time on this site but the only time it is mentioned is if a newguy or "fanboy" or "flamer" says it. OR we don't back up comments of praise it's never like "I like this album or what this guy said BECAUSE...". It also helps if we don't berate people for saying something first and THEN tell them to explain their words. It generally makes people more responsive.

The reason I only bring it up in these cases is because I loathe when people make ignorant statements about others' music and I'd like to save everyone a lot of grief.

I never say something I'm not prepared to back up. If I say something that I know is going to ruffle a few feathers for better or worse, I already have my arguments prepared. This Message Edited On 11.23.06

Fair enough...I just feel sorry for some of these guys...I think people on teh good ol internet are too quick to argue even over the most inflamatory statements. Often times it is hard to convey a message over text and this is the cause of many problems. I just wish we could be civil all the time and hammer through arguements like these without it always coming to blows...metaphorically...I think I spelled that right.

It's inspired by a lot of the Bay Area thrash bands of the 80's, but it still has a strong metalcore spin to it, as well as bits and pieces of influence taken from groove metal and speed metal.
For thrashiest band, any of Trivium's influences have them beat in that regard. The Crusade is nothing but a laughably derivative copy of ideas already done 20 years earlier.

Derivative means that it's copying the efforts of what came before. This has a very negative connotation. Trivium are not doing anything original, they are merely copying their idols. They are basically a cover band gone horribly wrong.

The German power metal act Edguy wear their influences on their sleeves, but they still have their own sound and are constantly experimenting and expanding. This is what differentiates them from Trivium, who have stagnated in a cesspool of bad imitation of ideas that came 20 years prior and fail to strike any new ground whatsoever.

Furthermore, Trivium's borderline plagiarism is only a pale imitation of that which they seek to emulate. Every band that they copy did their thing better than Trivium ever will. The band is too obsessed with being somebody else.

i think steerpike is right about the thrash issue in that its not NEARLY as thrash as matt talked it to be. it has its hints of thrash...but isnt even close to straight up thrash like people are making it out to be.

my questions to steerpike:

1. what is your deffinition of thrash? even metallica...(one of the greatest thrash bands known to man) arent straight-up thrash.

2. they must not have plagiarized metallica whatsoever...because they suck apparently...and if metallica doesnt suck and it sounds exactly like them...how can one suck and one be great? im assuming you didnt think metallica sucked. if you do...then its a case of you not liking thrash music. if you think metallica isnt thrash and dont like thrash...then i dont no why you are arguing the issue. but explain how trivium stole metallicas sound riff-wise. metallica hasnt played anything similar to most of the riffs in the new album. the only thing about this album really even similar to metallica is the vocal style.

To answer the first question, thrash metal relies on creating a feeling of almost violent spontaneity. Of all genres of metal, it has the highest riff emphasis. The bass tends to be low in the mix, and vocals aren't considered nearly as important as the guitars. It combines the intensity of metal with the visceral approach of hardcore punk.

With that in mind, Metallica were really only thrash for a couple of albums. MoP and AJfA were more speed metal, with the latter having a rather uninspired progressive spin. (Re)Load brought in Hetfield's non-metal influences, while the self-titled was more hard rock than metal. St. Anger was more nu-metal than anything else.

To address the second question, your logic does not work. I hate Metallica, and Trivium are just a cover band gone wrong so I hate them even more. Even if that weren't the case, derivative rehashing of older bands is not a formula for good music.

Now, there are some thrash bands I enjoy, Megadeth and Anthrax being my favorites. A lot of bands aren't melodic enough for my tastes, but I don't hate them. It's just Metallica that I have a particular animus for.

And to address the issue of the riffs, I honestly can't tell where a Metallica riff ends and a Trivium riff begins. It's the same formulaic approach to writing, with a hint of Pantera and Slayer thrown in to show that Matt Heafy is a bigger whore than previously imagined.

Matt Heafy can actually write catchy vocal melodies. But his ability to actually write a whole song lags way behind.
